BCODN Signature Event: Robert Kegan

  • 14 Jun 2012
  • 15 Jun 2012

BCODN proudly brings Robert Kegan, world-renowned Harvard psychologist and award-winning author, to Vancouver for two inspiring learning events: an evening keynote and a full-day workshop. Join us for one or both of these exciting events!

Drawing on 30 years of research and practice in “mindset psychology,” Dr. Kegan suggests a hidden mechanism can be reset, enabling us to make the changes we want in life and work. The shift of this hidden mechanism has implications at individual, group and organizational levels.

Plenary Evening Session: June 14

Do Our Minds Really Have a Mind of Their Own? Understanding Immunity to Change

In this session, Dr. Kegan will offer an overview of the concepts of Immunity to Change (ITC), providing you with a new model to make the shifts you want for yourself, your team or your organization.

Many of you will be familiar with his work, written with Lisa Laskow Lahey: Immunity to Change: How to Overcome it and Unlock the Potential in Yourself and Your Organization.

Location: BCIT Downtown Campus, 555 Seymour Street, Room 282

Exploring & Uncovering the Immunity to Change

Why is it so difficult for us to bring about lasting changes in ourselves, our teams, and our work settings—changes we genuinely, even urgently, intend? There are a host of usual answers: “lack of self-discipline”; “the incentives weren’t right”; “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”; “maybe I was not actually committed enough to the change in the first place!” But in too many instances, the usual answers are not very good!

In this fast-moving, experiential, and interactive workshop, Harvard professor Robert Kegan will invite each of us to make use of our own experience to explore the concept of an “immunity to change” — and what we can do about it.

In the morning, Dr. Kegan will guide you through an exploration of your personal immunity to change, and what you can do to overturn it. You can best prepare for this session by giving some thought to a single question: “Given the challenges I face now, and those I am likely to face in the future, if I could make significant improvement on just one thing (in my work life or private life), what would be the single most valuable thing for me to get better at?”

In the afternoon, we will turn to a consideration of immunity-to-change at the collective level, within groups and teams. While not required, you will derive the most from this part of the day if you can attend with at least one colleague from some intact, ongoing team or group of which you are each a part.

Participants should come to the day expecting to have a good time while doing some hard and valuable introspective work. The process Kegan and Lahey have built emphasizes safety in the process of personal discovery. Participants are not required to make any of their work public, and are encouraged to set the pace that works best for them throughout the workshop.
