It will be a veritable smorgasbord of presentations in a “cracker-barrel” format where you’ll get to sample from multiple 30-minute presentations on performance improvement and organization development subjects.

Sam Chen and Nick Freeman: Qualifications – Aligning Competencies across the Organization
In this session, we’ll take you on ICBC’s journey as we begin the process of tracking and measuring skills and competencies over time. We’ll share our vision, for the next 3 years, that ties together business process, systems, learning, management involvement/assessment, career development and overall measurement of human capital change. Come join us as we share insights, opportunities and learnings about the journey.
Rick Thomas: The Anxiety Chronicles – Personal Angst, Honesty, Humour and Coping
Anxiety is a part of most everyone’s life. We experience it at home, at work and at play. Anxiety, if gone unchecked, can cause very real physical and emotional distress and there’s no doubt that it is a factor in workplace absenteeism. Rick Thomas, EdD, has chronicled 39 individual’s real-life stories of mild to moderate anxiety in, “The Anxiety Chronicles: 39 Real-life Stories of Personal Angst, Honesty, Humour and Coping.” Rick will engage table groups in a dialogue about his personal experience with anxiety, his research and how the book is intended to create lightness and comfort around a serious and common topic that impacts people just like you.
David Hendrickson: Measuring Change, Making It Happen – Three Paths, Three Frameworks, Three Stories
An indicator is something that points to an issue or condition. Its purpose is to show how well a system is working. This session introduces three methods to measure sustainability within organizations and three frameworks for organizing your sustainability indicators: performance metrics; actor-centred; and pressure-state-response. Each indicator type and the way it is organized has advantages and disadvantages. We will also explore three common frameworks for organizing sustainability indicators.
Inge Zegel: Performance Improvement…more than just a change in behaviour
Performance Improvement, behavioural change, Human Performance Technology (HPT)…what do these terms mean and how do they relate? If your aim is to improve performance in the work place—whether through training, coaching or other initiatives–understanding these terms can help you communicate better with clients. Find out how performance technology can help develop more effective solutions. In this session, we will clarify these terms, look at the principles and framework of performance technology, and see how it relates to what you do.
Adrienne White: It’s All in Your Head!
Leveraging brain function for greater success in human performance is the focus of this session. Whether you are implementing new processes, giving performance feedback, or providing learning opportunities to people, understanding basic neuroscience will help you to engage listeners more deeply, and increase the success of your interventions. You will discover:
1. Why ‘safety’ truly is an important consideration for learning.
2. Why constructive, well-delivered performance feedback can disengage the recipient.
3. Discover some of the physiology behind change and how to make it work for you.
Peter Choi: Talent Management Practices of BC’s Public Sector Employees
This session is based on 20 years of observation and reflection on talent management in BC’s public sector. Through dialogue, we will develop a greater understanding of:
- Talent management
- Talent management practices in BC’s public sector
- The role of performance improvement, learning and organizational development practitioners in Talent Management
Laura Carter: Mindfulness for Managers
We will explore how incorporating a self-reflection exercise into their day can positively impacted leaders’ effectiveness. The session draws on research done among 20 middle-level managers in a crown corporation to ascertain the impact self-reflection and mindfulness had on their abilite to lead effectively. Learning objectives are:
- Understand what mindfulness is and how it relates to self-awareness/self-reflection
- Learn about the impact of self-reflection and mindfulness on the leadership effectiveness of a group of middle level managers
- Experience the impact of the self-reflection exercise (as well, the exercise will be a take-home tool)
Gary Harper: The Joy of Conflict Resolution: Transforming Victims, Villains and Heroes
In this interactive session based on Gary’s book by the same name, you will examine conflict stories to discover how they lock us into confrontation. You will also explore the concept of “when the knife went in” as a tool to analyze the root of a conflict. Specifically, you will be able to:
- observe the roles people play in conflict and how they lead to confrontation instead of collaboration and
- analyze a conflict and determine underlying cause
