November 25: Leading Change with a Distributed Team

The challenge: To create, foster and sustain a culture where a mix of salaried and independent consultants – far-flung across the province – are able to learn and work together to lead and implement extreme change in community physician’s offices. The initiative is PITO (Physician Information Technology Office) and the program’s mandate is to implement Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems in 3800 physicians’ offices by 2012.

Accepting the challenge: Shirley Leonard, M.A. (Leadership & Training) & HROEP (Human Resources & Organizational Effectiveness Professional) is the Implementation Team Lead for the BC Medical Association’s PITO Program.  Jivi Khehra is the Provincial Local Relationship Manager and is a vital contributor to the ‘glue’ for the team.

Discovering together: What are the elements that build and bind a geographically-dispersed and diverse group of people to become an effective team capable of meeting this mandate?  What are the challenges in a project like this?  What leadership style supports a team to meet those challenges? More importantly – will we succeed?

This will be a highly interactive and informative presentation about the challenges and opportunities of leading virtual teams. From the case study as described, we will explore team building, communication and conflict resolution in a team that is dispersed all over the province. You will learn the do’s and don’ts of leading a distributed team. Please bring your own organizational challenges and lessons learned to add to the richness of the dialogue. Some questions we may explore:

  • How to do team building virtually?
  • How do you ensure everyone’s needs are met in teleconferences?
  • How do you stay connected between teleconferences?
  • Lessons learned about leading a virtual team.
