Registration is now closed

We will be discussing the intersection of web technology, organizational change, and OD practice. We will also be assessing web conferencing as a venue for connecting BCODN members.

Increasingly, organizations of all kinds are deploying “social software” as an explicit catalyst for organizational change. Successful deployments can dramatically improve organizational effectiveness. However, success with technology can be elusive. As OD practitioners, why should we pay attention to such technologies, what do we need to know, and how do we respond as practitioners? Bring your questions, bring your experiences, as we explore the nature of organization development in the emerging virtual world of work.

The challenge: To create, foster and sustain a culture where a mix of salaried and independent consultants – far-flung across the province – are able to learn and work together to lead and implement extreme change in community physician’s offices. The initiative is PITO (Physician Information Technology Office) and the program’s mandate is to implement Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems in 3800 physicians’ offices by 2012.

Accepting the challenge: Shirley Leonard, M.A. (Leadership & Training) & HROEP (Human Resources & Organizational Effectiveness Professional) is the Implementation Team Lead for the BC Medical Association’s PITO Program. Jivi Khehra is the Provincial Local Relationship Manager and is a vital contributor to the ‘glue’ for the team.

Discovering together: What are the elements that build and bind a geographically-dispersed and diverse group of people to become an effective team capable of meeting this mandate? What are the challenges in a project like this? What leadership style supports a team to meet those challenges? More importantly – will we succeed?

This will be a highly interactive and informative presentation about the challenges and opportunities of leading virtual teams. From the case study as described, we will explore team building, communication and conflict resolution in a team that is dispersed all over the province. You will learn the do’s and don’ts of leading a distributed team. Please bring your own organizational challenges and lessons learned to add to the richness of the dialogue. Some questions we may explore:

How to do team building virtually?

How do you ensure everyone’s needs are met in teleconferences?

How do you stay connected between teleconferences?

Lessons learned about leading a virtual team.

Susan Scott’s book: “Fierce Conversations”, builds on the notion that our lives succeed or fail one conversation at a time”. This is at once commonsensical and revolutionary. It is commonsensical because all of us have had conversations that, for better or worse, profoundly altered our professional or personal lives. It is revolutionary because a course on conversations won’t be found in an MBA curriculum.

When you think of a Fierce Conversation, think authentic, honest and effective. A Fierce Conversation is not about holding forth on your point of view, but about provoking learning by sitting with someone side-by-side and jointly interrogating reality. The goal is to expand the conversation rather than narrow it.

Session Objective

To discover what a Fierce Conversation is (and isn’t) and how it can be used to immediately create success in your business and life.

What You Will Take Away from the Session

Three Transformational Ideas that will forever alter your view of the power of conversation.

The Four Objectives of a Fierce Conversation to immediately use in your life and work

Seven Principles that build an authentic honest environment.

Coaching Conversation -A powerful, deep-dive conversation used to surface and address issues critical to the success of individuals and organizations

Session Details

Thursday, October. 22, 2009 from 12 noon to 4:30 pm
Roundhouse Multipurpose Room, Roundhouse Community Centre

About the Facilitator

Deb Fortney is the president and owner of Team Talk Consulting which uses conversational facilitation (Team Talk) to increase team performance. She introduced Fierce Conversations as a change tool while working at Ernst and Young in the US to great success. Team Talk facilitation emerged from her work with teams in improving internal team functioning and client relationships with audit teams. Deb has worked as an organizational development professional for over 25 years and holds a Masters degree in Organizational Psychology from Antioch University in Seattle. She recently returned home to live in Vernon BC and is a BCODN board member.

As consultants, how often do we enter a contract with a new client, only to have our efforts to help undermined by resistance, a lack of trust, a lack of commitment, or other factors? If we could rely on establishing the perfect relationship with new clients quickly and effectively, it would drastically impact the results we and our clients would achieve together. Creating this relationship is more complex than initially appears; however, there are a number of clear principles and concepts that can move us closer to the consultant-client relationships we desire.

In this two and a half hour workshop, Schein’s concept of “the helping relationship” will be explored through presentation, discussion, and small-group exercises. At the same time, Schein’s principles will be modeled in the way the workshop is organized and the initial relationship-formation that is embarked upon between participants and facilitator. This will also be a source of reflection and discussion. Schein’s book Process Consultation Revisited: building the helping relationship will be heavily drawn from, but attendees are not expected to have any prior knowledge of Schein’s work. Workshop participants will leave with a new understanding of the client-consultant relationship, familiarity with Schein’s overarching principles, and written materials for more information.

In particular, you will:

Ronald R. Short
Emotional Intelligence in Relationships
The Lies We Tell Ourselves…
And Five Awareness Lessons to Correct Them

Friday March 2, 2007
8:30 AM – 12 Noon
Shadbolt Centre for

Besides being emotionally “dumb”, what is one characteristic that is shared
by gossip, blame, divorce, war, racism, homophobia, sexism, road rage, inter-group,
inter-personal conflict and falling in love?

They are created, developed, and sustained by the lies we tell ourselves.

You can catch yourself in the lie, and you can help your clients catch themselves-only
if you are aware. That is the goal of these five Awareness Lessons.

You assume you live in one world . . . when you live in two.

What you think is now . . . isn’t.

Who you think you are . . . is not you.

What you assume about the other . . . is about you.

What you most dislike . . . you participate in maintaining.

The morning will be highly experiential, illustrating as many of the above
as time allows. You’ll not learn something new as much as discover truths that
are so transparently obvious and universally shared that you ignore them.

Expect to be active. Expect to be surprised. Expect to have a good time with
colleagues while discovering what we all have in common: the lies we tell ourselves.

Process Work & Organizational Excellence: Individual & Executive Coaching with Dr. Stephen Schuitevoerder. This three plus day workshop explored the range of skills that Process Work offers group facilitators.

PROCESS WORK & ORGANIZATIONAL EXCELLENCE:
INDIVIDUAL AND EXECUTIVE COACHING
With Dr. Stephen Schuitevoerder
January 11-14, 2007

REGISTER TODAY for BCODN’s January workshop on process work and group facilitation
with Dr. Stephen Schuitevoerder (Jan. 11-14).
Online
Registration

This three plus day workshop will focus on Group Facilitation Training. We
will explore in depth the range of skills that Process Work has to offer group
facilitators. Facilitating a group is a challenging process that requires deep
perception, awareness and skill. When a group of people meet, they bring divergent
interests, values and perceptions to the meeting, making the process of interaction
dynamic and complex. Sometimes this diversity is expressed verbally, at other
times it is more subtle and felt in the non verbal behavior, attitudes and
mood of the meeting. Facilitating effectively requires a sensitivity to the
multitude of experiences in the group and a support of this diversity. When
this depth of facilitation occurs, the group becomes a powerful meeting place
where the richness of values, culture and perceptions can meet, interact and
learn from each other.

WHAT WE WILL COVER

This workshop will be an intensive training in Process Work group facilitation.
In the workshop we will cover in depth the various stages of group facilitation.
We will learn skills in atmosphere work, sorting and consensus, role theory,
edge work and working with hot spots, integration work, and rank and power
issues in groups. Throughout these processes we will be mindful of our personal
development as facilitators, encouraging the “metaskills” deep democracy, awareness
and fluidity. This is a hands-on, experiential workshop. Participants will
be fully immersed in Process work skills and their applications and will be
provided with a toolkit that can be applied in a wide range of group facilitation
settings.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Engage in activities to improve group performance.

To develop skills in working with complex facilitation moments such as
violence and personal criticism of the facilitator.

To learn in depth about the core concepts in group facilitation.

To increase personal awareness and thereby enrich facilitation expertise.

To gain an understanding of the concepts of Process Work.

MORE ON PROCESS WORK

Process Work is a cross-disciplinary approach to support individual and collective
change. It developed in the 1970s and 1980s in Zurich, Switzerland by Dr. Arnold
Mindell, a Jungian analyst. Process Work, also known as Process-Oriented Psychology,
offers new ways of working with areas of life that are experienced as problematic
or painful. Physical symptoms, relationship problems, group conflicts and social
tensions, when approached with curiosity and respect, can lead to new information
that is vital for personal and collective growth.

With its roots in Jungian psychology and physics, Process Work believes that
the solution to problems is often contained within the disturbances themselves.
Process Work provides a practical framework through which individuals, couples,
families, groups and organizations can connect with greater effectiveness and
creativity. Process Work adopts a sense of deep democracy whereby each aspect
of ourselves is seen to be meaningful and important and offers valuable information
for us when explored and unfolded. Similarly within an organization, each member
holds important and vital contribution to the group’s well-being and effectiveness. www.processwork.org

MORE ON THE FACILITATOR:

Dr. Stephen Schuitevoerder is an international consultant, lecturer and facilitator
based in Portland, Oregon. Stephen presents seminars, lectures and workshops
throughout the world including South Africa, Australia, Russia, South America,
Mexico and the United States. He works with diversity issues, team building,
executive development and organizational conflict and has facilitated small
and large group processes in a wide range of settings. Stephen is on the faculty
of the Process Work Center of Portland and is the CEO and President of this
school. He teaches Process Work both in the United States and internationally
and has collaborated to develop training programs in Process Work in a number
of countries including South Africa. He has a private practice in Portland,
Oregon and consults with individuals and executives throughout the world. www.processconsulting.org

January 11 – 14, 2007
January 12-14 9:30am to 4:30pm
Location: Venue located in North Vancouver near Lonsdale Quay. Details provided
upon confirmation of registration.

PARTICIPATION
Maximum 25 participants

FEE STRUCTURE
Members $750, Non-members $900

TESTIMONIALS

“I have used the PW approach to group process to:
Define, and align the leadership team around, Strategy
Mobilize Leadership Teams to advance & accelerate Strategic Change Initiatives
Engage key stakeholders to understanding and adopt strategic change
Enhance Team Development
Heighten and constructively utilize team conflict
Enhance creativity & innovation by surfacing differences in opinions, ideas,
points of view
Create leadership learning strategies”

“I can honestly say I have used at least some element of what I learned from
the Process Work Seminar in every facilitation that I have done since the seminar.
I have found that I get consistently better ratings from clients using the
techniques that we learned and practiced. I now understand how to engage quicker
and with more ease with most all members of culturally diverse groups. The
discussions are richer, the participation levels higher and the overall depth
of the learning is greatly enhanced due to the Process Work Seminar and Stephen’s
unique and gifted teaching approach. I have used Process Work with equal success
in nonprofits and in high tech, with first level managers to executives. This
seminar has given me a new perspective and useful tools and I would recommend
it to the most to consultants with every level of expertise. I can’t imagine
anyone who would not benefit from both Stephen’s facilitation and this seminal
work.”

“The group facilitation workshop inspired me to help a group of 40 managers
voice the elephant in the room – that in their company culture they had to
be smart and they could’t not know something. This was a
huge release for them and helped them find the courage to take risks and try
new skills as managers.”

REVISIONING OD: A POST-MODERN PERSPECTIVE
A Provocative Conversation with Dr. Gervase Bushe

Session Overview:

Please join Dr. Gervase Bushe in a provocative conversation about an idea
he is developing with Dr. Robert Marshak of American University; that there
is an emerging “post-modern” form of Organization Development.

They argue that academic descriptions of Organization Development (OD) found
in textbooks and most journal articles have not kept pace with innovations
in OD practice. A growing body of OD practice has, explicitly or implicitly,
rejected the modernist assumptions underlying traditional OD in favor of post-modern
assumptions about discourse, narrative and the importance of changing conversations
for changing human systems. They identify some of these new practices; consider
how they differ from traditional OD, and how they adhere to traditional OD
values and principles. Dr. Bushe will offer a definition for a new post-modern
form of OD and criteria for post-modern OD.

BCODN AGM 11:30AM to 12:30PM (For Members)

SESSION OVERVIEW FOR WORKSHOP 1:00PM to 4:00PM:

BCODN is proud to partner with BC Hydro to challenge the conventional thinking
of organization development with a half-day workshop on stakeholder engagement.

This workshop will be delivered by David Facey and Basil Stumborg from the
BC Hydro Stakeholder Engagement team and by special guest Michael Cheveldave
from NuOptics Consulting in Castlegar.

Stakeholder engagement shares many parallels with the OD work conducted within
and across organizations. BC Hydro’s Stakeholder Engagement team’s mission
is to create meaningful opportunities for stakeholders to contribute to BC
Hydro’s planning and decision-making, to demonstrate if and how that input
is used and to enable others at BC Hydro to do the same.

OBJECTIVES:

This half-day session will stimulate participants’ thinking, providing a valuable
opportunity to:

Understand the drivers for establishing BC Hydro’s stakeholder engagement
team, the team’s core services, and examples of their work;

Preview a demonstration of some decision analysis work, specifically a
tool that supports multi-attribute trade-off analysis;

Experience the effectiveness a technique based on the work of David Snowden’s
Cynefin framework where stories are gathered as a means of connecting with
stakeholders and making sense in complex environments.

For your convenience, the BC OD Network has instituted an online registration
system that allows us to streamline the registration process and to take

WHAT IS APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY?

Appreciative Inquiry is a process that brings groups of any size together
and invites people to learn and transform themselves, their relationships,
their organizations, and communities through personal stories of accomplishment
and aspiration. It begins with an affirmative interview to identify the best
of “what is” in order to pursue dreams and possibilities of “what could be.”

AI enables a fundamental shift toward cooperation, equality of voice, high
participation as daily practices, growing the capacity of organizations and
communities to accomplish what is most important to them.

Created in 1987 by David Cooperrider and colleagues at Case Western Reserve
University, AI has been used literally all over the world. Applications range
from transforming businesses to empowering women in rural communities of Nepal.

What makes AI work and how can it work for you?

This interactive and experiential one day workshop promises to open new possibilities
for you and your organization – a fun and informal workshop that will introduce
you to the magic of AI and some practical ways to use it. The workshop will
emphasize both theory and methods and will maximize a collegial interchange
of ideas.

Participants will learn core concepts that underlie AI practice. They will
experience the AI process and learn key patterns that guide an AI process.

Canada’s demographics already are impacting the ability of organizations to
do business at current and planned for levels. There are frequent reports on
chronic and systemic skill shortages in the marketplace. These are been driven
by: an aging population, economic activity, and changes in immigration. All
knowledgeable experts indicate that these pressures will continue to strengthen
for the foreseeable future. Those giving advice suggest that organizations
need to improve their attraction and retention practices. Yet there is an underlying
awareness that these will not be enough for many organizations.

On February 23rd you will have an opportunity to begin to think about and
act upon this issue differently. You will be provided an alternative conceptual
framework and an opportunity to explore its application through a case study.
You will leave with a systems approach and a modified idea generation tool

SESSION OVERVIEW:

Join us for a special evening with Change Gurus, Dick
and Emily Axelrod.

The Axelrods are authors of You Don’t Have to Do It Alone: How to Involve
Others to Get Things Done, which the New York Times calls “a complete blueprint
for involving others and the best of the current crop of books on this subject.”

This evening Dick and Emily, who are the creators of The Conference Model,
a large group intervention for redesigning processes and organizations, will
share with us their latest creation, Network Driven Change.

The Axelrod’s believe that successful organizational change occurs by building
networks through a series of well designed strategic events. They also believe
that these events should be designed and implemented not by consultants but
by organizational members. The result: issues get resolved and the organization
increases its capacity to handle future changes.

In this lively session, Dick and Emily will discuss how Network Driven Change
is making a difference at organizatons like Boeing and our own Fraser Health.

SESSION OVERVIEW:

We talk of trust and credibility as staples in any relationship. If each of
us had a barometer to measure our own index of credibility how would we measure
up?

BCODN invites you to an interactive 1.5 hour seminar to meet someone who will
challenge your belief systems on how easy and quick a client (external/internal)
can go from asking ‘who are you?’ to believing ‘we can’t do without you’ in
our organization.

Learn how you can flush out the economic buyer and the deal killers, how you
can get your clients to actually call “you” to give you the order and more.

Monjie Llorente is unconventional and extreme. He has learned his craft from
the street, helping individuals and organizations reach high levels of performance
and awareness. He has been a salesperson, a turnaround manager, an entrepreneur
and a CEO. His ability to find the best in you while peeling away those behaviors
that hold you back from reaching your goals will leave you entertained and
challenged intellectually.

Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to learn about effective change
management from the pro’s!

Workshop Overview

Most change programs simply don’t live up to people’s original hopes and expectations
in terms of the results they deliver. The programs frequently are designed
in ways that are overly complex, take too long to offer positive reinforcement,
place too many burdens on participants, and fall down of their own weight.

Charlie Baum and Lorne Blackman will
present a well-tested alternative based on the premise that successful change
programs deliberately begin with results. They will show how within 2-3 months,
clients can achieve significant bottom-line results that serve as building
blocks for larger scale change. Not only do clients achieve rapid results,
they also begin building organizational “capital” for more – momentum, energy,
skills, capacity. This approach has been the subject of numerous books and
articles, including High Impact Consulting by Robert Schaffer, and the Harvard
Business Review article “Successful Change Programs Begin with Results” by
Robert Schaffer and Harvey Thomson (January 1992 issue).

The session will begin with a presentation on the basic approach, with many
case illustrations of bottom-line success from a variety of sectors. In the
afternoon, participants will apply the concepts to their own situations.

We ask that you bring a real case situation to this workshop – for example,
a project you are working on that would benefit from results now, or a past
project that failed to deliver appropriate grains for your client. By the end
of the session, you should have many ideas for how you can more closely link
your change efforts with client results.

Who should attend: Professionals in management, HR, operations, change management,
consultants, coaches.

Lessons Learned,
A Practical Application of Change Management to a Technology Implementation

Event Summary

The recent BCODN Workshop hosted by Navigo Consulting and Coaching was by all accounts a great success, with a high number of people turning out to learn more about how to manage change associated with a technical implementation.

Titled “Lessons Learned – A Practical Application of Change Management to a Technical Implementation,” the workshop showcased Navigo’s Navigate Change Model, a three-phase, multi-stage model that covers the lifespan of change management, from planning to implementation to sustainment. “We want to share with you the model that underlies our change management work and how that model influences the strategies that we recommend,” Navigo principal Heather Lehmann told the audience.

After a brief overview of Navigate Change, the team invited the participants to co-create a list of “lessons learned” from various change management topics, including: communication, sponsorship, training/support, project planning, involvement, decision-making and resistance.

Navigo then introduced its guest panel: three clients who spoke of their experiences with recent technical implementations in their organizations. First up was Stewart Andrade from Teekay Shipping, which implemented fleet management software across three business units in North America, Europe and Asia. During his presentation, Andrade spoke of the need to have change management fully integrated into a project. He also credited Teekay’s success with this project to having strong, visible sponsorship from a senior executive throughout the process. “It can be an uphill battle if you do not have a senior executive to lead the charge,” he said.

Claire Adams from Business Objects, which undertook a PeopleSoft implementation that involved 10 business modules and 1,500 end users, agreed with Andrade’s comment on the necessity for high-level buy-in, adding that it may be necessary to dedicate time to educate the sponsor on his or her role. “The coaching of the project leaders – and sponsors – was critical,” she said. “They needed to understand their roles as change leaders and change sponsors in order to be able to lead the effort.” Adams stressed that a flexible strategic plan is key to any project’s long term success. “You need to be prepared for changes in project plans and timelines,” she said.

Flexibility has been key to the ongoing technical upgrades at Vancouver Coastal Health, noted VCH’s Darcia Pope. Pope is working with Navigo on a large-scale project that spans Richmond to Powell River, and that involves more than one health authority and several, consecutive implementations. “Each implementation has several ‘go lives’ that would occur with only weeks between each of them,” she said. “We have to keep our planning fluid and adaptable because we had to keep applying the lessons learned from one implementation to the next.”

Summary & Feedback on Event

Session Overview

Implementing technology on time, on budget and with full support of stakeholders
is a tall order. Key to achieving all three is a planned approach to managing
the changes. Join project leaders from three local organizations as they share
the truth about the effectiveness of the change management strategies leveraged
during their IT projects.

Darcia Pope, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority

Claire Adams, Business Objects

Stewart Andrade, Teekay Shipping

Given that Navigo Consulting and Coaching (www.navigo.ca) worked
with each organization during the project, Sheila Bouman and Heather Lehmann
will set the context. They will provide an overview of Navigo’s change management
approach and how it influenced their guidance to each of these clients. Then,
each client will provide examples of what worked, what didn’t, and what they
might do differently next time. There will also be an opportunity for you to
ask questions, and also share examples of lessons learned from your own experiences
managing change. As an outcome, we will co-create a master list of lessons
learned that can be applied to future IT implementations and to similar change
projects.

It will be a fun, interactive, informative, and practical session.

Heather Lehmann and Sheila Bouman are two of three principals at Navigo Consulting
and Coaching Inc, a Vancouver based change management and business coaching
firm. With over 50 years of collective experience, Navigo has extensive experience
in organizational development including, facilitation, business coaching, team
development, and change management.

Navigo specializes in helping leaders and their people through changes such
as merger and acquisitions, restructuring, and implementing new technology
and associated business improvements. Our experience in technology driven change
includes helping project sponsors, leaders and teams build implementation success
with over 15,000 users through implementations such as PeopleSoft HCM and Financial,
Indus PassPort, Plumtree, HRIS, SAP, and customized applications.Navigo’s approach
to organizational change and transition is grounded in a strong theoretical
foundation based on the work of a number of experts in the field, including
William Bridges, Daryl Conner and John Kotter. We integrate this knowledge
with our experience as consultants and certified business coaches to help build
client’s internal capability to lead and sustain change.

Place: City Hall Learning Centre (12th and Cambie)

BCODN All Day Workshop - Organization Transformation: Coaching & Change, Presented by Jim Selman - April 12th - OD Cafe Conversation

OD Cafe Conversations

What is it?

This is an opportunity to meet, socialize and to discuss OD ideas and issues
in an informal setting. It will be held once a month, in the late afternoon,
at a centrally located restaurant (or another suitably informal venue). The
session will start with an opportunity to socialize and catch up with OD colleagues
over coffee for 15 – 20 minutes. Then the session host will start off the discussion
on the selected OD topic and let the conversation carry on for approximately
an hour. Hopefully this will allow us to explore and discuss ideas that we
often don’t seem to have time for in our regular meetings. The sessions may
be big or small but they’re certain to be lively!

Please mark this new venture in your calendar and come out to join us.

Schedule:

Session 1
Date: Tuesday, April 12
Time: 5:00 – 6:30
Location: TGIF’s restaurant, Metrotown, Burnaby (north side,
second floor, below Silver City movie theatres)
Host: Neil Kyle
Topic:
– Is there a future for organization development?
– What would it look like and what do we need to do to guarantee a future for
OD in BC? Or, internationally?
– Some have suggested that OD is fading away and will be supplanted by change
management. Is this true?
– There are a number of good articles on this topic in the Journal of Applied
Behavioural Science, December, 2004, Vol.40, Issue 4.

Session 2
Date: Tuesday, May 10
Time: 5:00 – 6:30
Location: TGIF’s restaurant, Metrotown, Burnaby (north side,
second floor, below Silver City movie theatres).
Host: Randy Olson
Topic:
– Is OD a big sandbox?
– Is it like modern Psychology – in search of credibility?
– Who does OD now?
– Do we need to explain it or apologize for it?
– Are these questions relevant?
– Hello!

Session 3
Date: Tuesday, June 7
Time: 5:00 – 6:30
Host: Dave Weaver
Location: TGIFs restaurant, Metrotown, Burnaby (north side,
second floor, below Silver City movie theatres).
Host: Dave Weaver
Topic: Internal consultants, how to be valuable, and how to
be valued!

Bottom line vs people. If you chose OD as a profession, then you may be
more interested in helping people than improving company profits. That preference
might create personal dilemmas for consultants who must justify the value
of their work to others.
How do you do it? What has been effective in the past?

Are there ways to use the techniques of an external consultant; marketing,
promotion, etc. to develop new internal business opportunities?
